The Tofte Cabin both saves energy and generates
it.
- Electricity
comes from photovoltaic panels (on the garage roof) and
a wind generator using the grid as a back up. The goal
is to generate energy equal to that used annually from
the grid and the project is close to reaching that goal.
In the summer excess energy generated is sent back to the
grid, available to the metropolitan area during the season
of heavy air conditioning use.
- A ground source water-to-water heat pump is the source
of heat, which is delivered through a radiant floor system.
- innovative window design maximizes the cooling effects
of the lake breezes.
- The cabin is super-insulated, including the windows, to
maintain a constant temperature.
- Appliances are energy efficient.
