The Tofte Cabin

The Tofte Cabin is an outstanding example of “green” building. The construction process minimized disruption to the environment; materials are from renewable or recycled sources; recycled wood or wood from sustainable forests was used; construction waste was recycled; and the copper roof will be good for 50 years. The Tofte Cabin is estimated to have a gold rating using the LEED Version 2.0 for commercial buildings. (LEED-R had not been developed at the time the cabin was built. It's estimated that The Tofte Cabin would have received a LEED-R platinum rating.)

The Tofte Cabin both saves energy and generates it.

  • Electricity comes from photovoltaic panels (on the garage roof) and a wind generator using the grid as a back up. The goal is to generate energy equal to that used annually from the grid and the project is close to reaching that goal. In the summer excess energy generated is sent back to the grid, available to the metropolitan area during the season of heavy air conditioning use.
  • A ground source water-to-water heat pump is the source of heat, which is delivered through a radiant floor system.
  • innovative window design maximizes the cooling effects of the lake breezes.
  • The cabin is super-insulated, including the windows, to maintain a constant temperature.
  • Appliances are energy efficient.

But, you don't need to be an expert to use The Tofte Cabin's alternative energy system. It is designed so a novice can manage it. The system is monitored by The Weidt Group (TWGEnergy.com). and maintained by Winkelman's Environmental Construction (WERC). Check out WERC at www.ecowerc.com.
